At Hope we specialise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT was introduced in the 1960s and had been evolving ever since into one of the most effective and empirically proven types of therapy for a range of mental health conditions. We also integrate mindfulness techniques into our sessions to help you manage your wellbeing.
CBT is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thoughts and feelings can trap you in a negative cycle. CBT aims to help you deal with overwhelming problems in a more positive way by breaking them down into smaller parts.
We will help you to identify factors which are causing and maintaining your condition and work together with you to change these patterns by teaching you the concepts, tools, and methods which you can use to understand and improve the way you feel.
Unlike some other types of therapy, CBT deals mostly with your current presentation and recovery, rather than significantly focusing on issues from your past.
We may also explore other areas such as your values, beliefs, and boundaries to help support your wellbeing.
In short, no. CBT therapy is a type of talking therapy which is very much about the working partnership between us. CBT requires participation from you, and you'll also be asked to complete some tasks outside of your sessions.
In your first session you will be asked questions so that we can assess what is going on for you and determine the best course of action together. We'll also take time to carefully explain how CBT works and what you can expect to ensure you are comfortable with the process.
This is a concern shared by many when beginning therapy. It is really important to know that under no circumstances will you be judged for anything you share. We always approach people in a non-judgemental and empathetic manner.
In the main session will take place online. This means you can undergo therapy in a place of your choice. Sometimes we may continue our online treatment outside or in other locations if required.
If you would prefer session to be face to face this can also be accommodated in and around the Milton Keynes / Northampton area.
One of the great things about CBT is how effective it can be with just a few sessions. Most people begin to see improvements from just 8-10 sessions. The exact number of sessions will depend on a number of factors but typically CBT will last between 8 and 20 sessions.
CBT sessions are 50 minutes long and typically take place once a week, although we may agree to space them out to every two weeks or more as you progress. The exception is your first session which will last between 1.5 and 2 hours to allow us time to discuss exactly what you are experiencing to ensure CBT is the best route for you.
CBT sessions can range in price. We are committed to ensuring CBT can be accessible to all. A 50 minute session with Hope Wellness Therapies costs £35.
