Seeking therapy to support mental wellbeing has become an essential step in the lives of many. However, the process of finding the right therapist or type of therapy might feel overwhelming. It’s important to know that it's okay if the first therapist you meet or the first type of therapy you try doesn't click for you.

Therapy is a very personal experience. Just as we don’t gel with every person we meet, not every therapist will be the right fit for us. Crucially, this doesn't mean that therapy won't work for you; it simply means you haven't found your match yet.

Exploring Different Therapists & Therapies

There are many therapists out there. We each bring our own unique style and personality. Some therapists are more directive; offering guidance and structured sessions, while others take a more passive role; listening and allowing you to lead the conversation. It’s important to find a therapist whose style resonates with you. The relationship you have with your therapist is crucial, I’ll touch on this more later.

Just as the right therapist is essential, so too is finding the right type of therapy. There are many types of therapy, and what works for one person may not be as effective for another. This can also depend on your specific diagnosis and symptoms too.

Please don’t be disheartened if a particular type of therapy doesn’t seem to be making a difference. It's all about finding what works for you. Sometimes, it takes a bit of trial and error until you find the approach that aligns best with your needs and personality.

The Importance of the Therapeutic Relationship

As I touched on earlier, the relationship you have with your therapist is considered the foundation of successful therapy. Studies consistently show that the strength of the relationship between you and your therapist can significantly impact the effectiveness of therapy.

A strong therapeutic relationship fosters trust, which is essential for opening up about your most personal struggles. It also allows for honest communication, enabling both you and your therapist to work collaboratively towards your mental health goals.

If you’re not feeling comfortable with your therapist, or you feel unsure about your progress, please don’t be afraid to talk to them about how you’re feeling and explore this together.

How to Find the Right Therapist and Therapy for You

Unless you have been referred by your doctor, finding the right therapist or therapy type may involve some research and self-reflection. Here are a few steps to guide you through the process:

  1. Reflect on your needs: Consider what you hope to achieve in therapy. Are you looking to manage anxiety, work through trauma, or build better relationships? Understanding your goals can help you find a therapist with the appropriate expertise.

  2. Research therapists: Look for therapists who specialise in the areas you're seeking help with. Take a look at their websites where you can read about their approaches and backgrounds.

  3. Schedule initial consultations: Many therapists offer a free initial consultation. Use this opportunity to ask questions and get a sense of their style and approach. Don't be afraid to ask about their experience with specific issues you're dealing with.

  4. Trust your instincts: Pay attention to how you feel during the consultation. Do you feel comfortable and understood? Does the therapist's style resonate with you?

  5. Be open to change: If after a few sessions you don't feel a connection or see progress, it's okay to talk about this and, if necessary, look for another therapist.

It's important to recognise that finding the right therapist or therapy type can be a trial and error process. You might find a therapist who seems perfect on paper but doesn't feel right in person, or that a type of therapy you thought would be beneficial isn't quite what you need. That's okay. The journey to finding the right fit might involve meeting with several therapists or trying different types of therapy. It's a process of self-discovery and growth.

Don't Give Up

Your mental health journey is worth the effort. If you need to, keep searching, keep trying, and remember that each step brings you closer to the right fit and the healing you deserve for a healthier, happier you.
